Kayaking at Gross Reservoir – Osprey Point

South Boulder Creek - Kayaking at Gross Reservoir, Osprey Point, CO

Summer is coming to an end – I wanted to get one more boat trip in before the mountain lakes get too chilly. So, Poppy, my daughter, and I kayaked Gross Reservoir today.

We woke up at 6:15 AM, picked up Poppy and stopped to eat at Moe’s Bagels around 7 AM. It takes about an hour to drive up to Osprey Point Boat Ramp, and another half an hour or so to pump up the inflatable kayak and rig all the gear. By a quarter till 9, we launched into the cool water and paddled around in the bendy fingers of the reservoir. Eventually, we made our way to where South Boulder Creek pours down the mountain to join the reservoir at the South West tip. We played a bit in the eddies and standing waves in the creek, getting the tiniest taste of white water. Poppy and I started to wish we were on a long river trip… We paddled back to the boat ramp and made it back to Boulder before noon. A great way to start the day.

There does seem to be an Osprey who lives near the boat ramp. We spotted one several times during the course of our paddling, soaring high in the sky and landing on tree tops near the shoreline. There was one moment, when the Osprey began to lift off a barren tree bough, where everything seemed to drift into slow-motion – really beautiful… if only I had a telephoto lens pointed at that bird 🙂

See some of the trip pictures, including when we spotted the California Zephyr Train making its way from Chicago to San Francisco, through the Rocky Mountains.
